Explaining The Basics

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are false teeth. They are typically made out of a durable acrylic material, and are designed to replace your missing teeth, restoring your ability to bite, chew, speak, and smile naturally.

They usually take several appointments over a period of about a month to fit. First, you’ll come to our office. Then, your doctor will examine your mouth and determine if dentures are right for you. He will create a bite mold and impressions of your smile that are sent to a dental lab.

Then, the lab will build some test dentures and send them back. You’ll come to our office to try them on, and your doctor will make necessary adjustments. This process will be repeated several times. Then, when the fit is perfect, your permanent dentures will be made. You’ll come back to Whitestone Family Dentistry to pick them up, and then you’ll be sent home to enjoy your new smile.

Understanding The Difference

Full vs. Partial Dentures

Partial dentures replace one or several missing teeth. They are usually recommended when you’ve lost some teeth, but your remaining teeth are healthy. They snap onto your healthy teeth using metal clips. This minimizes movement and ensures that your false teeth will stay in place. Partial dentures may be a good alternative to dental bridges or dental implants, particularly if you are on a tight budget.

Full dentures are a bit different. They are usually only used in patients with extensive oral health problems. This is because they consist of a full arch of teeth that must fit closely over the gums. This requires the extraction of any remaining teeth, even if they’re healthy.

With full dentures, you can quickly and easily restore your smile. They are the most affordable way to restore the lower, upper, or both arches of your teeth, so they may be a good option for patients with extensive oral health problems. How Long Will

My Dentures Last?

Generally speaking, partial dentures last somewhere between 10-15 years, and full dentures usually have a somewhat shorter lifespan of 5-10 years. This can vary depending on how well you care for your dentures. It’s possible for dentures to warp, break, or become damaged if you’re not careful when you wear, store, and clean them.

How Do I Care

For My Dentures?

Your doctor will give you a full set of instructions on how to care for your dentures. However, the basic care steps are pretty simple to understand. First, remove your dentures after every meal, and brush the dentures, as well as your teeth and/or gums.

You also must take your dentures out overnight, and store them in a glass of denture cleaning solution. This keeps them fresh and bacteria-free, and prevents them from warping, which is possible if they dry out. Taking dentures out overnight also gives your gums time to relax and recover, which reduces the risk of sores and other complications of dentures.
